Liverpool was placed on a tentative list of World Heritage Sites in 1999. Liverpool City Council (this site open up in a separate browser) and English Heritage (this site will open up in a separate browser) joined forces in 2001 to pursue the nomination and jointly funded the post of a World Heritage Officer. The nomination was co-ordinated by the World Heritage Officer, employed by Liverpool City Council and working under the guidance of the World Heritage Site Steering Group, which consists of representatives of a wide range of public organisations that have management responsibilities within the Site, following on-going public consultation. The nomination has received considerable financial assistance from the Northwest Development Agency (this will open in a separate browser).
The nomination was supported by a wide range of national, regional and local partners, who are represented on the World Heritage Site Steering Group. Newsletter No. 1 (February 2002) (pdf 553kb) asked for comments on the proposed boundary and issues affecting the Site. Newsletter No. 2 (October 2002) (pdf 669kb) asked for comments on the proposed boundary, the Buffer Zone and the Statement of Significance. Newsletter No. 3 (June 2003) (pdf 634kb) suggested a revised boundary and Statement of Significance. Newsletter No. 4 (August 2003) took the form of the Summary of the Draft Management Plan. The full case for the nomination is made in the Nomination Document that was prepared by Liverpool City Council on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Only a limited number of copies were printed initially, but it is intended that further copies of the Nomination Document will be printed for sale in the summer of 2005.
